Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, or is done to set prominent ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. Ear surgery can also replace ears lost due to injury and to correct ear problems such as awkward folding, unusual smallness or absence of natural folds and curves.

Ear Surgery operation usually takes two to three hours and requires the surgeon to make a small incision behind the ear to expose ear cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted to bend the ear back toward the head. Alternative techniques involve folding the cartilage back onto itself, and allowing the ear to reshape itself without removal of the cartilage. To pin the ears back, surgeons  sew non-removable stitches concealed behind the ear.

Ear surgery does not usually require an overnight hospital stay, and patients can be up and around within a few hours after the procedure is completed. Overall recovery time is about five days to seven days, after which  time normal activities may be resumed but taking care to avoid bending their ears for about a month.

Arm Lift or Brachioplasty.

Loose upper arm skin is usually related to weight loss. If you were overweight, or spent many years in the sun, you may have developed saggy skin or heavy upper arms. To compensate the increased volume of the upper arms, your skin stretched. After weight loss, the skin often fails to tighten up, and so it sags. About the only way to improve this problem is through an arm lift called a brachioplasty.

Scars and Incisions in the arm lift are the drawback
Scars are the greatest drawback of this operation. They will extend from your armpit to the elbow, along the inside of the arm. This operation exchanges one cosmetic problem (lose or saggy skin) for another (scars). In general, those with very lose saggy skin are most likely to find this exchange worthwhile. Those with a small amount of lose ness will probably not want to make the trade.

Anesthesia: General or sedation.
Location of operation: Office or hospital.
Length of surgery: 1-2 hours
Length of stay: Outpatient (home same day).
Discomfort: Mild to moderate. Anticipate 2-5 days of prescription pain medication.
Swelling: Improves over 14 days.
Bruising: Is rare
Bandages: Will be removed in 1-7 days.
Stitches: Will be absorbable.
Back to work: 3-7 days.
Exercise: May be resumed in 2 weeks.
Final result: Will be seen after the scars have matured, which will be about six months

BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections

BOTOX® has enjoyed growing popularity over the last few years as an effective treatment for lateral crow’s feet and frown lines. Injected through the skin into the underlying muscle, BOTOX® works by paralyzing the muscles responsible for causing the wrinkles. Since the muscle can’t continue to function, lines soften and in some instances, are eliminated. BOTOX® is not permanent, lasting anywhere between four to six months. It is often used in conjunction with other skin refinishing treatments for maximum results.

BOTOX Risks & Reactions
Risks include an allergic reaction to the toxin, swelling, redness, bruising, numbness, and headaches. Rarely, a reduced blinking reflex, which may last for several months, can cause corneal exposure and ulceration.

Breast reductions are preformed to reduce the weight of very heavy breasts, making it easier to enjoy a more active lifestyle.  Women often find that this surgery relieves back, neck, and shoulder pain. The primary benefit of the operation is functionality, but most often a breast lift will enhance your appearance and improve your body image.

The incisions for breast reduction are not unlike those used for a keyhole-anchor” breast lift technique. The procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision which circles the areola, and extends downward, to follow the natural curve of the breast.  Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin are removed.  The nipple and areola are then moved to their new position.   The skin from both sides of the breast are brought down and around the areola giving shaping to the new contour of the breast.

In most cases, the nipples remain attached to their blood vessels and nerves. However, if the breasts are very large or hang lose ly the nipples and areolas may have to be completely removed and grafted into a higher position. Unfortunately this usually results in a loss of sensation in the nipple and surrounding tissue.

Another reduction method known as the periareolar or don nut shape may also be effective if there is not a large excess of skin. This method has the advantage of hiding scars; however it tends to flatten the breast shape to some degree. In general, the more skin which is cut, the more it is possible to shape the breast and therefore, there is a trade-off between the extent of the scars and the extent of the shaping of the breast.

As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. A breast lift,  is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Breast lifts can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. Breast implants inserted in conjunction with the lift can increase both their firmness and their size.

A Breast lift usually take 1 1/2 to 3 1/2  hours. Techniques vary, but the most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision that follows the natural contour of the breast.  Incisions outline the area from which breast skin will be removed and will define the new location for the nipple. When the excess skin has been removed, the areola & nipple are moved to the higher position. The skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. Stitches are usually located around the areola in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area, and along the lower crease of the breast.

After  the surgery  you’ll wear an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressings. The breasts will be swollen, bruised, and uncomfortable for a day or two, there is some pain but it shouldn’t be severe.  Medications prescribed by your surgeon will usually be enough to make you comfortable.

Within a few days, Your bandages or surgical bra will be swapped out for  a soft support bra. You’ll need to wear this bra 24 hours a day for three to four weeks, over the layer of gauze. The stitches should  be removed after a week or two.

You can expect some loss of feeling in your nipples and breast skin, caused by the swelling after surgery. Numbness usually fades as the swelling decreases over the next five weeks or so. In some patients it may last a year or more, and occasionally it may be permanent, but these are the inherent risks you will need to understand with this procedure.

What is a saline-filled breast implant?

A breast implant is a sac (implant shell) with the outer shell made of silicone elastomer (rubber). The implant is surgically implanted under the breast tissues, and then filled with sterile saline (a salt-water solution) through a valve.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure done to increase or decrease the size
and proportions of a woman’s breasts.

What size breast implant should be used?

Generally, the larger you want your cup size, the larger the breast implant the surgeon will consider (measured in cubic centimeters, or cc’s).

The McGhan Medical BioDimensional® Planning System is used with the  Style 468, Style 363, and Style 163 BioCurve™ Shaped Breast Implants to help provide more consistent and predictable results. With this unique planning system, you and your surgeon can consider important dimensions like breast width, height, and lateral protrusion to establish the ideal implan size and shape to complement your figure. Breast width is significant, because it figures prominently in both cleavage and lateral (sideways from the body) protrusion. No other system provides such exacting techniques to determine what breast implant will work best for you.

Your surgeon will also evaluate your existing tissue to determine if you have enough to cover the breast implant. If you desire a breast implant size too large for your tissue, the doctor may warn you that breast implant edges may be apparent or visible post-operatively. You may even risk surgical complications. Also, excessively large breast implants may not maintainas youthful an appearance over time.

Where is the incision made?

There are three locations that are commonly used to insert the breast implant. The inframammary fold incision is made where the lower portion of the breast meets the chest wall. The periareolar incision is made where the darker tissue around the nipple meets the skin. And the transaxillary incision is made in the armpit. This last incision site usually involves the surgeon using an endoscope (a small telescope with a video camera) to help with the surgery. Augmentation with all of these incisions can be done in a manner that leaves a minimal scar after healing is complete.

How long does the surgery take?

Breast augmentation surgery times vary due to the surgeon’s technique, the location of the incision, and the placement location of the implant. Typically, surgery takes from one to two hours.

Are breast implants available in different shapes?

The most commonly used breast implant has a round shape. The round breast implant will enhance breast size, and may produce a more rounded appearance to the upper breast.

Shaped breast implants are designed to reflect the slope of the breast. With its upper area gently sloping downward and outward, the shaped breast implant is more likely to shape the upper part of your breast with a gentle slope.

Why do some breast implants have a testured surface?

Breast implant shells with a textured surface were designed to reduce the chance of capsular contracture (a hardening of the breast). The BIOCELL® large-pore surface texture, found only in McGhan Medical breast implants, may help hold the breast implant in place.

Are studies available on results with breast implants

There are many studies that were considered by the FDA before McGhan Medical saline-filled breast implants were approved. Results of studies done by McGhan Medical appear in Breast Implant Surgery:

Many other studies were done by independent investigators that show no higher prevalence of cancer or autoimmune disease in patients with breast implants, compared to patients without breast implants.

What are the possible complications?

With breast implant surgery, there are possible complications from the surgery, and from the implant.

Undergoing any surgical procedure may involve the risk of complications such as the effects of anesthesia, infection, swelling, redness, bleeding, and pain.

Possible complications specific to breast implants include deflation or rupture, capsular contracture (a hardening of the breast tissue if it compresses the breast implant), formation of calcium deposits, hematoma (a collection of blood), seroma (a collection of fluid), and changes in breast and nipple sensation. Some other possible complications are related to dissatisfaction with cosmetic results, such as wrinkling, asymmetry, implant displacement, incorrect size or shape, implant palpability, scar deformity, or sloshing. A list of complications and the rate of occurrence is available in Breast

How long will a breast implant last? Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices. You will likely undergo implant removal with or without replacement over the course of your life. What happens if the implant deflates?

The saline solution is quickly absorbed into your body. You would need to have a new implant surgically implanted to replace the deflated implant, in order to regain the volume lost by the deflation.

Facelift Cosmetic Surgery

face lift surgery

Face lift cosmetic surgery can minimise the effects of ageing by smoothing out lines and wrinkles and tightening up loose skin on the face and neck.

Face lift surgery when performed properly by an experienced surgeon, leaves the patient looking more youthful and relaxed.

How Does A Face Lift Work?

During a facelift, an incision is made from the temple to the ear on both sides. Facial skin is separated from underlying muscle. Excess fat is removed and the facial muscles tightened. To complete the face lift the skin is pulled up across the face, trimmed and sewn.

The incision from a face lift is hidden in the hairline and behind the ears so there is no visible scarring.

How Long Does A Facelift Take?

It takes between 2-3 hours depending on how much work your particular face lift involves. Many people combine face lift surgery with eye bag removal which takes longer than just a face lift. Face lift surgery is performed under general anaesthetic with an overnight hospital stay.

Recovery

Recovery time following face lift surgery varies. Many patients return to work after 3 weeks after their face lift. Most women can disguise the effects of face lift surgery with make up after 10-14 days.

Are There Any Side Effects From Face Lift Surgery?

Side effects from facelift surgery are temporary. Bruising and swelling of the face is to be expected in the days after your face lift. Following a face lift, your face will feel tight and sore for several days, but the discomfort is adequately dealt with by prescription painkillers.

Cosmetic Eye Surgery

eye bag removal surgery

Unsightly changes around the eyes are not necessarily linked with ageing, they can occur in relatively young people.

The eye is surrounded by a layer of fat which can swell and cause eye bags. The problem is simply corrected by cosmetic eye surgery, known as a blepharoplasty.

Lower Eye Bag Removal Surgery

Lower eye bag surgery involves a cut just below and to side of the lower eyelid. During lower eye bag removal, fat is removed and excess skin is trimmed to conform to the new contour. Any swelling or discoloration should disappear within 2 to 3 weeks of your eye bag surgery operation. Any dryness or itchiness of the eyes following cosmetic eye surgery will clear in a few weeks. There may be some pull on the lid at the comer of the eye following the eye bag surgery operation. This will correct itself within 2 to 5 weeks.

Upper Eye Bag Removal Surgery

Upper eye bag removal is performed to remove unsightly fatty folds from the upper eye lid. This fold can fall across the eye and interfere with normal vision. The resulting scar in the upper eyelid crease is extremely fine.

Liposuction Cosmetic Surgery

liposuction surgery

If you have ever despaired about those areas of fat that never seem to respond to dieting or exercise, then liposuction surgery may be the solution.

Liposuction was introduced in 1982 and has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgery operations. Liposuction has revolutionised body contour surgery in recent years and is now an internationally approved method of safely removing unwanted fat.

During Liposuction Surgery

Women tend to accumulate fat around the buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, ankles and lower abdomen. Men tend to store excess fat around the flanks, abdomen and the breasts. Liposuction can be used to target these difficult areas.

Liposuction surgery is currently the only medically approved procedure that allows the selective removal of localised fat cells. Gynaecomastia (male breast) surgery can also be performed in conjunction with liposuction.

Liposuction surgery involves the insertion of a small metal tube into the affected areas, where the adipose tissue is removed by vacuum suction. Liposuction is carried out under general anaesthetic and the patient will usually stay 1 night in hospital. Smaller areas can be treated with liposuction using a local anaesthetic, on a day care basis. A pressure garment is worn around the treated area following the liposuction for about 21 days.

Individuals who are grossly overweight are poor candidates for liposuction, since it is not a treatment for obesity. It is recommended for those patients who wish to improve their body contour, by the removal of unsightly fat pads.
