ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) — The groundbreaking vaccine that prevents cervical cancer in girls is gaining a reputation as the most painful of childhood shots, health experts say.

Lauren Fant, 18, winces as she gets her third and final HPV shot from nurse Stephanie Pearson.

As Austin Powers would say; “Ouch, baby. Very ouch.”

Health officials have touted the Gardasil vaccine as an important new protection against a cancer-causing sexually transmitted virus. In recent months, they’ve also noted reports of pain and fainting from the shot.

During its first year of use, reports of girls fainting from vaccinations climbed, but it’s not clear whether the pain of the cervical cancer vaccine was the reason for the reaction.

“This vaccine stings a lot,” said Patsy Stinchfield, an infectious disease expert at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, speaking at a recent meeting of vaccination experts in Atlanta, Georgia.

It sure does, said 18-year-old Lauren Fant. She said other shots tend to hurt only at the moment of the needle stick, and not after the vaccine plunges in.

“It burns,” said the college freshman from Marrietta, Georgia.

The pain is short-lived, girls say; many react with little more than a grimace. But some teens say it’s uncomfortable driving with or sleeping on the injected arm for up to a day after getting the shot.

Officials at Merck & Co., which makes the vaccine, acknowledge the sting. They attribute it partly to the virus-like particles in the shot. Pre-marketing studies showed more reports of pain from Gardasil than from dummy shots, and patients reported more pain when given shots with more of the particles.

Meanwhile, U.S. health officials have noticed a rise in reports of vaccine-associated fainting in girls. From 2002 to 2004 there were about 50 reports of fainting; from 2005 until last July, there were about 230. About 180 of those cases followed a shot of Gardasil, which came on the market in 2006.

But it’s not clear that Gardasil’s sting is related to the fainting increase, said Dr. Barbara Slade, an immunization safety specialist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Teens tend to faint from needles, so a three-dose vaccine for adolescents would be expected to prompt some added fainting, she said. Researchers aren’t sure why teens faint more than other age groups, but nervousness may be a factor.

Gardasil is the first vaccine approved specifically to target the human papilloma virus, or HPV, which causes cervical and vaginal cancer. The Food and Drug Administration approved it for girls ages 9 to 26.

Preliminary studies indicate only 10 to 20 percent of them have gotten at least one dose.

But researchers said those rates are due to reasons other than worries about pain, including Gardasil’s $120-a-shot price, limited supplies initially and mixed feelings by some parents and doctors about a vaccination that assumes girls have sex.

Dr. Andy Andrews, an Atlanta-area pediatrician, said he doesn’t believe the shot’s ouch has diminished demand.

“A lot of the older teens are coming in themselves, without a parent. So they themselves are motivated to come back in,” Andrews said.

A second HPV vaccine, GlaxoSmithKline’s Cervarix, is under FDA review and could become available in 2008. Complaints of injection pain have not surfaced in clinical trials, said Liad Diamond, a company spokeswoman.

If you’ve been avoiding burgers, ice cream, and pizza thinking you’re doing your waistline a favor, don’t. They can actually help you lose weight — and keep it off, too. Here are the hidden slim-down perks of five foods that get a bad rap and the best way to add each one back into your diet.

Red meat

art.red.meat.jpg

Lean red meat, such as l sirloin tip, T-bone, or strip steak, is a great source of protein for dieters.

Even burgers and meatballs can be light fare if you make them with ground sirloin, says Bonnie Gluck, M.S., R.D., a clinical dietitian at New York Methodist Hospital in New York City. “Lean red meat — lean being the operative word — is a great choice for women who are trying to shed pounds,” she says. “It’s an excellent source of protein. And protein takes longer to digest, helping you feel full and cutting the likelihood that you’ll snack later on.”

A study of 100 women from Australian researchers found that overweight women who ate reduced-calorie diets rich in protein from red meat and dairy lost more weight than those whose reduced-calorie plans had little meat and more carbs. “Protein can reduce hunger,” says study author Manny Noakes, Ph.D., associate professor with the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization (Australia’s national science agency) in Adelaide. And being less hungry while you’re trying to lose weight can prevent overeating.

Best way to enjoy it: Choose ground beef labeled “97 percent lean” or “extralean,” which means it has less than five grams of fat per serving. Want steak? Get lower-fat cuts from the loin, like sirloin tip, T-bone, or strip steak, Gluck says.

Watch out for: Beef that’s labeled Prime. “It’s very high in fat,” Gluck says. Buy cuts graded Choice; the meat has less fat and still tastes good. And remember to limit your portion size, no matter how lean the meat. “Many restaurants will serve an eight-ounce steak or burger, which means you’re getting twice the amount you actually need,” says Dave Grotto, R.D., author of “101 Foods That Could Save Your Life.” Stick to a three-ounce serving (roughly the size of a deck of cards).

Ice cream

Good news for ice cream lovers: A recent Swedish study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that women who have at least one serving of full-fat dairy products a day gain less weight than women who don’t. Researchers aren’t entirely sure why, but it’s believed that a compound in milk fat called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may aid weight loss. Health.com: Top 5 foods for women

Not all studies support the dairy-aids-weight-loss claim. But Gluck feels there’s more evidence for than against, even if full-fat dairy’s secret is simply that it’s more satisfying. “Many women find that low-fat versions of dairy products like ice cream and cheese just aren’t satisfying,” she says, “so they may eat a lot of them — downing hundreds of calories in the process, trying to fulfill their craving — when just a little bit of the full-fat stuff would have done the trick.”

Best way to enjoy it: Have a little cheese, ice cream, or a glass of milk each day. “You really can’t go wrong with that,” Gluck says. “Dairy should be part of your diet, whether you’re trying to shed pounds or not. You need the calcium to maintain strong bones. And the vitamin D and CLA in milk both have cancer-fighting properties.”

Watch out for: Fat intake. Remember that full-fat dairy products do contain saturated fat, Gluck says, so it’s best to limit yourself to two servings daily — and to make your third serving a low-fat or skim choice.

Eggs

After years of being barred from the average American diet, things are looking sunny-side up for eggs. According to a study from Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, overweight women who eat egg breakfasts lose twice as much weight as women who start their days with bagels. Researchers say the protein in eggs increases satiety and decreases hunger, helping women eat fewer calories throughout the day. “Eggs are a perfect protein source because they have all eight essential amino acids,” Grotto says. “And recent research debunks the idea that they have adverse effects on the heart.”

Best way to enjoy them: Try ‘em for breakfast. This is the ideal time for getting the proven fill-you-up benefits the rest of the day. Besides, it takes only a couple of minutes to scramble an egg. Work a hard- or soft-boiled egg into lunch, too, by adding it to a spinach salad. Or make an omelet or veggie frittata with two to three egg whites to every one yolk to keep the calories low (whites have just 16 calories, while whole eggs have 72 each). Health.com: Reconsidering the egg

Watch out for: Eggs served at restaurants.Even an egg-white omelet is likely to be fried in butter or oil unless you ask that it be prepared with cooking spray. And like pizza, beware of any egg dish that’s smothered in cheese. If you’re craving more flavor, add some herbs or salsa.

Pizza

You already know you can enjoy some mozzarella on your favorite pie and still drop pounds. But there are other ways you can make that slice even healthier. To hike the diet-friendly fiber, choose a whole-wheat crust and top your pizza with veggies like peppers, artichokes, and broccoli. “Like protein, fiber is digested slowly and helps keep you feeling full, longer,” Gluck says.

Even better? By sticking with healthful toppings like veggies and lean protein (grilled chicken is a good choice), a medium slice will set you back only 200 to 250 calories.

Best way to enjoy it: Choose whole-wheat varieties. You can make your own or try a frozen one, like DiGiorno, Boboli, South Beach, or Amy’s. If you’re ordering in or dining out, get a thin-crust pie (it’s typically lower in calories and fat than thicker versions); try selections available at Pizza Hut and California Pizza Kitchen.

Watch out for: Additional oil and fat. Avoid any pie that’s deep-dish (that means the crust is cooked in oil) or loaded with sausage and pepperoni, Gluck says. And while a bit of cheese is fine, a whole lot is not. Skip the extra cheese.

Canadian bacon

Unlike a regular strip of crispy pork fat, Canadian bacon — which comes from the loin, one of the leanest parts of the pig — is a dieter’s best friend, with a third less fat than regular bacon. If that isn’t reason enough to put Canadian bacon on your plate, a recent study from Purdue University shows that women who eat a diet rich in lean pork and other protein keep more lean body mass during weight loss than women who eat a low- calorie diet with little pork and other protein sources. An added bonus: Women who eat meals rich in protein from pork report that they feel satisfied, in spite of the fact that they are on reduced-calorie diets, and say they’re happier overall. Health.com: Best new foods of 2007

Best way to enjoy it: Have some anytime. “Add Canadian or turkey bacon, another light pick, to scrambled eggs, or use some in a bacon-lettuce-and-tomato sandwich on whole-wheat bread with reduced-fat mayo,” Grotto says. You can chop it into strips and use it for a protein boost on salad, too.

When you’re a teenager acne is viewed as an uncomfortable part of growing up. It always seems to get worse right before that big date or the school dance. You do everything you can to get rid of it while waiting to just simply outgrow it. So, as you slip into your twenties you assume that it’ll all be gone. Too often it doesn’t work like that. While the boys are getting over their acne problems some girls are still trying to figure out when it is going to stop. With all the ongoing hormonal changes that a woman goes through, and the pregnant years, acne can be an ongoing problem. Five percent of all women over forty still have some acne condition and this will last until menopause. Only one percent of men over forty still have acne to deal with.

Sometimes acne can be a sign of things that are not going right in your body. It can be a warning sign that there may be hormonal or pituitary gland issues that you must bring to the attention of your health care provider. You’ll know this if your acne suddenly stops responding to treatment that had always been successful previously. Or if after not having any acne at all or not for a number of years you suddenly have of a serious outbreak. Another sign to watch for is if you should find your acne gets worse during pregnancy or menstruation. If any of these acne changes occur go to see your health care provider immediately. They will likely want to do an overall physical to make sure that nothing has suddenly become unbalanced.

Woman also find that in their twenties or even thirties they may experience episodes of mild acne for no known reason. None of the teenage remedies work any more because this bout will be because of different hormonal changes. These kinds of changes can be due to a woman’s monthly cycle and can even make for acne that follows the cycle’s changes. The more hormonal action going on the more acne the woman has. Then as the levels lower the acne does too or it even completely disappears. In these cases over the counter lotions and creams won’t be able to do anything and instead you will have to see your dermatologist for some prescription anti-acne medications.

One of the easiest methods of controlling acne in women is to put them on the pill. That’s right your dermatologist will likely suggest using oral contraceptive pills to regulate your hormone levels and control the acne. They will suggest a pill with a low dose. Unless the woman is looking to get pregnant at that moment this solution is actually a very good one for treating mild to moderately bad acne. Some women don’t like using the pill because some can have mild side effects. There are other similar remedies that a dermatologist can offer then a woman will have to choose what best suits her.

CHICAGO - A major breakthrough in stem cell research which could eliminate the need for human embryos was hailed as a means of ending an ethical dilemma, but researchers cautioned against abandoning the study of embryonic stem cells.

Embryonic stem cell research holds the promise of curing diseases and even leading to organ transplants formed in petri dishes. But it is highly controversial because viable embryos must be destroyed to extract the stem cells and because cloning is often involved.

Researchers on Tuesday announced a way to potentially gain unlimited access to stem cells without the use of embryos by using four genes to force human skin cells to regress back to embryonic stem cells.

US President George W. Bush, who has blocked federal funding of research using new embryonic stem cells, applauded the discovery.

"The President believes medical problems can be solved without compromising either the high aims of science or the sanctity of human life," the White House said in a statement.

"We will continue to encourage scientists to expand the frontiers of stem cell research and continue to advance the understanding of human biology in an ethically responsible way."

The study of embryonic stem cells has also been condemned by the Roman Catholic Church and the pope recently endorsed adult stem cell research as an ethical alternative.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops said the new discovery "reminds us once again that medical progress and respect for human life are not in conflict; they can and should support and enrich one another for the good of all."

But the new technique is still in its infancy and cannot be relied upon as a replacement for embryonic stem cell research, scientists warned.

While the new cells appear to be nearly identical to embryonic stem cells, it is still far too early to determine if they will respond in the same way.

They also carry the risk of cellular mutation because the genes used to stimulate the transformation are delivered with a retrovirus.

"This new research is just the beginning — we hardly understand how these cells work," said James Thomson of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, who led one of the two teams which made the simultaneous discoveries.

"It is not the time to abandon stem cell research," Thomson said, adding that embryonic stem cells will remain the "gold standard" by which other research is measured.

The lack of sufficient funding has already set the field back by four to five years while the political controversy and "strong stigma" has prevented many young scientists from entering the field, Thomson added.

The discovery shows that more, not less, embryonic stem cell research is needed said Robert Klein, chair of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, which funds embryonic stem cell research.

"With as brilliant of a discovery as this is, it will be three or four years before we really understand the stability of these lines," he told AFP.

The new cells will have to be studied to see if the tissues will break down over time or if they cause other mutations or cancer.

"It would be an absolute tragedy if this nation made a second strategic mistake and bet the entire future of the nation’s research on research that has no history."

But the new discovery will make it harder to fight opponents of stem cell research, warned Alta Charo, a professor of law and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Bush has twice vetoed attempts to grant federal funding to new embryonic stem cell research and Republicans have also tried to ban the research completely.

"It’s going to fuel those who call for preferential federal funding only for non-embryonic stem cell research and it will certainly complicate any efforts to expand funding for embryonic stem cell research at the federal level," said Charo, who sits on the advisory board of the International Society for Stem Cell Research.

"No matter how well this new technique can be used … calls for criminalization or wholesale de-funding of embryonic stem cell and cloning research are not warranted," she said.

US health authorities have announced that a mutated version of a common cold virus has caused 10 deaths in the last 18 months. Adenoviruses usually cause respiratory infections that aren’t considered lethal. However, a new variant has caused at least 140 illnesses in New York, Oregon, Washington and Texas, according to a report issued Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CDC officials don’t consider the mutation to be a cause for alarm for most people, and they’re not recommending any new precautions for the general public. "It’s an uncommon infection," said Dr. Larry Anderson, a CDC epidemiologist..

The illness made headlines in Texas earlier this year, when a so-called boot camp flu sickened hundreds at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. The most serious cases were blamed on the emerging virus and one 19-year-old trainee died. "What really got people’s attention is these are healthy young adults landing in the hospital and, in some cases, the ICU," said Dr. John Su, an infectious diseases investigator with the CDC.

There are more than 50 distinct types of adenoviruses tied to human illnesses. They are one cause of the common cold, and also trigger pneumonia and bronchitis. Severe illnesses are more likely in people with weaker immune systems. Some adenoviruses have also been blamed for gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis and cystitis.

There are no good antiviral medications for adenoviruses. Patients usually are treated with aspirin, liquids and bed rest.
