When I first started learning about how to market websites I spent months trying out all the scams and ideas being propagated across the various webmaster forums before I figured out that it was all total rubbish.

The only real secret to sustainable search engine marketing is hard work, a good quality website and traditional marketing.

So many people seem to be fixated on get rich quick SEO where they find some magic bullet that gets them top rankings in Google after 3 weeks but this simply doesn’t happen. Top rankings take time and don’t come to people who waste time trying out the latest scams.

Most people on Digital Point seem to be continually trying to exchange links, buy links, sell links and generally do everything that Google tells you not to. It would take Google a matter of weeks to collect the urls of every site that has sold links in public at DP and give them all a penalty. Would they do this? My bet is they already have. Once the sellers stop passing PR the whole network comes tumbling down.

The problem is that until you experience the effects of an effective linkbait campaign or some old fashioned website restructuring and optimisation you really don’t realise what it takes to rank well on Google and generally do pretty much everything that Google tells you not to. Do these people know something others don’t or are they just following a blinkered "get rich quick" approach without taking the time to figure out if it will actually work.

The strategic importance of a website can be seen from the fact that at present, there are around two billion or more websites on the Internet, and this number keeps on growing literally every minute.

To make sure that your website works efficiently and is found by those who require your services, then you should need to fully optimize your site. The art of website optimization helps to guarantee that your site will be found among the multitude of sites that are currently cluttering the Worldwide Web.

The Logic Behind Website Optimization

Website optimization is the term for the process of devising and crafting your web pages to ensure that they have a high ranking in popular search engine results. If a business entity is serious and is determined to have an online business presence, then optimizing their web page is of utmost importance.

When designing your website, it is vital that you specifically design it to get a higher ranking in search engine results, and to do this, you need to use the following stuff: Meta tags, Keywords, Title tags, Image Alt tags, Text as well as the overall design of a website. These components play a large part in fully optimizing your site. Although many search engines these days no longer make use of Meta in gaining higher rankings, these however, are still vital and should be included enhancing your site.

Why It’s Important To Optimize A Website

The answer to the question above is quite simple: if your potential customers and target niche cannot locate you online, then they will most certainly find your competition, and when they go to your competitors, your business most likely will fail.

As a matter of fact, over 85% of online shoppers and buyers use search engine results to find the stuff they are looking for on the web. If your page then is not ranked in the top 10 or 20 of the search results; it would be tough for your online business to succeed, since no one will find you, and they cannot buy from you as well.

Factors That Help Optimize Websites

- Put In Appropriate Keywords and Phrases. First and foremost, you need to select keywords and phrases that best suit and properly refer to what your site is all about. A keyword is used to effectively describe the contents of your web page is. If your website is about baking, then the best keyword to use would be ‘baking’. When outlining the content of your website, ensure that you concentrate on just a few important keywords and phrases, since keyword phrases play a very vital function in optimizing you site.

- Text. Because your text plays a major role in influencing your website’s page ranking, it is of vital significance to optimizing your site. Take note that when drafting or composing your text for your site, it should contain the proper number of vital key words and phrases, which are used in different ways. Keep in mind that your keywords and phrases should appear at least three times, but not more than seven times in your texts.

- Meta Tags Help Describe Your Site. Meta tags are HTML codes that are found between the < HEAD> and < /HEAD> tags. These tags contain a description of your site and are found in the search engine results when you key in a certain word or phrase. Ensure that your Meta tags include your most important keywords, so that your customers will know exactly what your website is offering.

- Title Tags. The title tag of your site must always contain the most important keyword phrase of your site, since this will aid you in getting higher search engine ranking results. Type your key word phrase in lower and use only the most relevant keyword phrases.

- An Image Alt tag comes after a website’s graphic address or URL in your HTML code. To fully optimize your graphics as well as your website, ensure that you insert a readable keyword phrase within the Img Alt tags.

Google has opened a battle for dominance of the mobile Internet with a broad alliance of companies backing its "open source" software for mobile devices, analysts say.

The announcement Monday of the "Android" platform aiming to bring the full power of desktop computing to mobile devices represents a challenge to Microsoft and Apple, and also firms like mobile phone maker Nokia, which is not part of the "Open Handset Alliance."

The announcement surprised analysts who had expected Google to announce the launch of its own gPhone to compete against Apple’s popular iPhone.

"This is not about a Google phone," said telecom analyst Jeff Kagan. "This is about the growing and changing software experience for mobile phones. Cellphones are becoming the third screen in our lives. Television, computer and next is the mobile handset."

Greg Sterling, analyst at Search Engine Land, said Google is taking on companies like Microsoft, which has its own Windows Mobile platform for smartphones.

"Android is clearly competitive with proprietary mobile operating systems such as Windows Mobile, in the same way that the open source movement competes with many of Microsoft’s core products," Sterling said.

But he said prospects for the alliance remain unclear, especially with key holdouts like AT&T, the largest US mobile operator, which has an exclusive deal with Apple’s iPhone.

"Will Android-phones — or an actual future gPhone — be an iPhone killer? Expect in the wake of today’s news a range of headlines declaring this to be the case. But until phones come on the market, no one can tell," Sterling said.

Analysts say Google is eager to become the key search engine for mobile phones and to get the advertising revenues that are starting to become available for the platform.

Michael Gartenberg of Jupiter Research said Google’s plan may be attractive by sharing some ad revenue with mobile phone operators looking for new sources of cash to subsidize costly smartphones.

"If Google can deliver, the impact could be huge," he said. "At a time when both carriers and handset vendors are looking to cut costs and at the same time consumers are embracing more functionality in their mobile devices, Google could be coming to market with the right product at the right time."

But he added that other competitors may fight the Google effort to control the mobile phone.

"There are going to be challenges," Gartenberg said. "Neither Microsoft, (mobile maker) Research in Motion or Nokia are going to roll over and play dead with this announcement."

Google said the new initiative, which should be available next year, offers first comprehensive mobile operating platform that software developers are free to adapt in any ways they wish for video, audio, social networking and other features.

The 34-member alliance includes China Mobile, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, T-Mobile, Telefonica, LG and eBay.

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt declined to reveal whether the US-based Internet search colossus will release its own phone based on Android, which will allow for services and features supported by online ads.

"If you were to build a gPhone you would build it out of this platform," Schmidt said.

"Imagine not just a single Google phone, or gPhone, but thousands of gPhones made by a variety of manufacturers."

SYDNEY (AFP)

Australia’s competition watchdog on Tuesday said it had no objection to Google’s 3.1 billion US dollar purchase of online advertising firm DoubleClick.

In a decision that Google described as a world first among anti-trust regulators, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said it had no competition concerns about the deal.

"In this context, the ACCC considered that the merger was unlikely to result in a substantial lessening of competition in an Australian market," the ACCC said in a statement.

In a practice common in the industry, DoubleClick installs software bits referred to as "cookies" on Internet users’ computers to track where they go online and what pages they view.

Privacy advocates have expressed fears about the implications of Google and DoubleClick merging their expansive databases regarding people’s Internet activities.

The ACCC is taking separate legal action against Google alleging the Internet giant mislead web users and misidentified sponsored links.

SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization" and is generally used to refer to the industry or process of optimizing websites to be well interpreted by the search engines. A SEO is a SEO expert or anyone practicing search engine optimization. But those were the basics.

Years ago, SEO was used to make sure the site ranks well in the search engines by placing the keywords in strategic locations on the page, and it was natural to understand SEO as ‘optimizing for the search engines’.A lot of years have gone by and the search engines became more sophisticated, the people began to realize that search engine traffic alone is not equal to online business success and SEOs started paying attention to other things, influencing online people behavior.

A Wholistic Approach To Website promotion

The art of search engine optimization, in essence, has grown to become a more holistic approach to optimizing and promoting websites, taking into account not only website crawlability and search engine rankings and traffic, but also conversion rates, social marketing and customer retention rate.

Get More Targeted Search Engine Traffic

One unique thing about the approach of SEO is that every aspect of it aids the old art of website optimization. If you research your customers, you learn the words they use, when referring to your product, and you use the words on your site. Thus, you get more targeted search engine traffic.

By knowing how people view websites and what motivates them to buy, you will be able to reconfigure your pages and remove the useless clutter, thus increasing your sales from the same amount of visitors. In the end, you will not only be serving a larger amount of people, but they will be able to make quicker decisions, enjoy buying online and being your customers. Happy customers are more likely to become your loyal clients and could also refer others to your online business.

Top Five SEO Terms A Beginner Should Take Note

- Keywords and keyphrases. Keywords and keyphrases are the words you want your Web site to rank well for in a search engine results page, which are also called SERPs. Depending on your audience, yours can be one word, a combination of words, or an entire phrase. To reduce word-bloat, let’s use the term keywords to encompass the two types.

- PageRank.

A PageRank is a measurement that the those obsessed with Google use to test their rankings in Google. SEO and search engine marketing (SEM) professionals also use the term to describe your ranking in the SERPs and the ranking algorithm points given to your site by Google. PageRank is an important part of your SEO success.

- Spamming.

Spamming is a method of SEO that attempts to trick a spider and dupe loopholes in the ranking algorithm to influence rankings for targeted keywords. Spamming can take many forms, but the most simple definition for spam is any technique a Web site uses to misrepresent itself and influence ranking. The two methods of SEO are based on whether you want to spam or not.

- Black hat SEO.

Spamming the search engines. Black hat SEO is lying, cheating, and stealing your way to the top of the SERPs.

- White hat SEO.

Optimizing your site so it serves the user, as well as attracts spiders. In white hat SEO, anything that leads to a good user experience is considered also good for SEO.

US search engine giant Google says it’s struggling with an unusual challenge in China’s Internet market, which is how to cater to masses of Web surfers who go online for the first time via mobile devices, rather than migrating from PCs.

The challenge for Google is prompting the company to design new products tailored to the local market, and it may make more acquisitions in the country to help that along, says Lee Kai-fu, Google’s president for greater China. "China has a large mobile opportunity, with so many mobile users who will become mobile Internet users in the next few years as 3G and other technologies become pervasive," Lee said in an interview. "These mobile users have very different usage patterns from the American users. Most Chinese users who touch mobile Internet will have no PC at all. "That requires thinking from ground zero on how to design products that fit their needs," he said.

There are around 500 million subscribers to mobile communications devices in China, which has a population of 1.3 billion. With over 162 million Web users, China is the world’s second largest Internet market, after the United States.

Lee did not further elaborate on how Google was re-designing products for China, but its foray into China’s Web market has included buying stakes in a range of companies from multimedia software to social networking firms.

Internet search leader Google Inc. is determined to sell more ads, and is sharpening its focus on the medium with demographic data from the influential Nielsen Co.

Under an agreement to be announced Wednesday, Google will pay Nielsen an undisclosed amount to obtain detailed information about the kinds of people who watch specific TV shows. The breakdown, drawn from Nielsen’s rating service, typically provides viewers’ ages, gender, marital status and other personal data that help advertisers choose the audience most likely to be interested in their product or service.

New York-based Nielsen has been selling demographic data to television stations and advertisers for years. Google’s access to the information is significant because it gives the Mountain View-based company more tools to draw upon as it tries to target television ads as effectively as it has done on the Internet. Because it processes more than 1 billion search requests per day, Google hasn’t needed as much outside help to learn about the interests of its Internet users. "This is another indication that Google is very serious about selling more ads in the mainstream media," said Brad Adgate, director of research for Horizon Media, which helps advertisers buy television ads.

Since May, Google has been delivering television ads for about 14 million subscribers to EchoStar Communication Corp.’s Dish network and Astound Broadband cable service.

Microsoft will release Windows 2008 Server as the direct successor to Windows 2003 Server in the spring of next year. The new server OS, also known under the code name Longhorn, shares a code base with Windows Vista and incorporates many additions.

Using the completely revamped server management console, configuration and administration of the new server becomes much simpler. The new Internet Information Server 7 also sports a new user interface. With virtualization technology integrated directly into the operating system, third party tools or solutions are no longer necessary to use virtual machines and the like. Lastly, administrators are as up-to-date as it gets, since Windows 2008 Server includes all of the components slated for inclusion in Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista.

Tom’s Hardware took a look at the first release candidate, version RC0. Generally speaking, release candidates are very close to the final product and are distributed to testers primarily in order to find bugs. New features are not to be expected in the later release candidates, though. What we see here today is most definitely what users will get in the final version. Thus, a look at RC0 should allow us to draw conclusions about the final release.

Although the Server 2008 may have the Vista kernel under its hood, that does not mean that administrators will be greeted with colourful windows using the Aero interface. Understandably, Microsoft’s focus lay on the server-related issues in implementing improvements, and so the management aspect took precedence over design.

Nonetheless, even if the primary purpose of a server OS is not to look good, Windows Server 2008 offers the option of installing the new, colourful design. Thus, even jaded system administrators can get a little bit of that Vista feeling and see if the “Wow” really does start now.
