When you’re a teenager acne is viewed as an uncomfortable part of growing up. It always seems to get worse right before that big date or the school dance. You do everything you can to get rid of it while waiting to just simply outgrow it. So, as you slip into your twenties you assume that it’ll all be gone. Too often it doesn’t work like that. While the boys are getting over their acne problems some girls are still trying to figure out when it is going to stop. With all the ongoing hormonal changes that a woman goes through, and the pregnant years, acne can be an ongoing problem. Five percent of all women over forty still have some acne condition and this will last until menopause. Only one percent of men over forty still have acne to deal with.

Sometimes acne can be a sign of things that are not going right in your body. It can be a warning sign that there may be hormonal or pituitary gland issues that you must bring to the attention of your health care provider. You’ll know this if your acne suddenly stops responding to treatment that had always been successful previously. Or if after not having any acne at all or not for a number of years you suddenly have of a serious outbreak. Another sign to watch for is if you should find your acne gets worse during pregnancy or menstruation. If any of these acne changes occur go to see your health care provider immediately. They will likely want to do an overall physical to make sure that nothing has suddenly become unbalanced.

Woman also find that in their twenties or even thirties they may experience episodes of mild acne for no known reason. None of the teenage remedies work any more because this bout will be because of different hormonal changes. These kinds of changes can be due to a woman’s monthly cycle and can even make for acne that follows the cycle’s changes. The more hormonal action going on the more acne the woman has. Then as the levels lower the acne does too or it even completely disappears. In these cases over the counter lotions and creams won’t be able to do anything and instead you will have to see your dermatologist for some prescription anti-acne medications.

One of the easiest methods of controlling acne in women is to put them on the pill. That’s right your dermatologist will likely suggest using oral contraceptive pills to regulate your hormone levels and control the acne. They will suggest a pill with a low dose. Unless the woman is looking to get pregnant at that moment this solution is actually a very good one for treating mild to moderately bad acne. Some women don’t like using the pill because some can have mild side effects. There are other similar remedies that a dermatologist can offer then a woman will have to choose what best suits her.

‘Tis the season for excessive spending, nonstop cookie noshing and socializing with reckless abandon. Amidst all the present wrapping and holiday card sending, we all struggle to find the time to look our best, no matter what the occasion. With countless holiday parties pending and possible soirees at your very home, quick and sassy hairstyles can really come in handy!

Regardless of your hair texture, color and style, you’re bound to find a few tips in here that make your holiday primping just a bit easier.

For the multi-tasker…
If you’re the kind of woman who’s always got a dozen different things going on at once, you may appreciate a hairstyle that allows you to focus on another element of your prep at the same time. Have you tried hot rollers? Great for hair that takes to curls and manageable with products for hair that sometimes resists them, this helpful styling appliance even clues you in when curlers are ready to be applied and when they can be removed. While your curls are setting, apply your eye makeup, perfume, jewelry and other fancy accessories.

For the glamour girl…
If you’ve got time to spare, you can really enjoy the full experience of getting dolled up! Whether you prefer cascading curls, soft waves or shiny and straight hair, your evening outfit will be complete once you adjust the finishing touches on your tresses. Consider a head full of spiraling curls, accented by a few silver hairclips. Dress up a traditionally straight style with micro-braids and festive little barrettes or hair accessories. Weave miniature flowers or tiny ribbons in a perfect French braid, allowing a few strands to sneak out and rest against the back of your neck. Finally, you can twist and pin your hair up with a large hairpin and curl the locks that spill out from the twist. If you select this style, use additional bobby pins to fasten the twist securely to your head.

For the chic pixie…
If a shorter style is the name of the game, this holiday season you’ll be anything but lame. Arm yourself with some styling products, especially a good gel and mousse. For a flirty look, apply gel and work some of your short locks into curly sections and pin them wildly about your head. This look will be nicely accented by your choice of makeup, especially around the eyes. You can also use a styling product by itself to encourage your own curls or waves to come out to play for the evening. Experiment with straight styles and curly styles, and both straight and zigzag parts.

For the last-minute lovely…
If you’ve only got a few moments to spare, simplicity will be your best friend. If your hair responds well to blow-drying, consider getting sassy with a zigzag part. After washing your hair, dry it straight. Take a comb and trace a zigzag from your forehead back. Brush your tresses as you normally would, being especially careful not to disturb your new part. Adorn your sleek style with a delicate yet fancy hair clip. Better yet if you can find one to match your outfit.

Once the primping process concludes, kick back, relax and prepare to have the time of your life. No matter which style you choose, step outside with confidence and realize that you are the spark that lights up the party.

There are many myths about hair, and sadly perhaps, even hairstylists who should know better circulate some of this Hair Voodoo. Here are the scientific FACTS about the top 10 hair myths:

1.  Cutting your hair makes it stronger or grow faster.

Bull winkle. Its hair, not a lawn. Exactly where this myth started is unknown, but is probably related to the observation of men’s facial hair. There are different kinds of hair on your face and head. Hair on your head and facial hair have different properties. Cutting your hair will only make it shorter and hairs grows almost exactly half an inch per month, no matter what you do or take.

2.  Split ends can be repaired.

Sorry Charlie, not true. Split ends cannot be repaired and should be cut off immediately or they will split yet higher and do yet more damage.

3.  Brushing your hair is good for it.

To the contrary, brushing your hair is very bad for your hair and the leading contributor to split ends and hair breakage. By all means groom your hair, but once it is in place, STOP.

4.  Tight hats cause baldness.

This one probably started in the military where young men entering the service were required to wear hats and soon showed signs of going bald, or at least of hair thinning. This is due to coincidental timing. The age that young men enter the military is also the same age that male pattern hair loss begins. This is due to dihydrotestosterone, not hats. Hats do cause hair breakage and to a lessor degree to split ends.

5.  Hair can turn gray or white over night.

What utter nonsense. This one was born in literature. What part of "fiction" did they not understand? Hair receives its color genetically and can only turn gray or white over very long periods of time. Actually the hair doesn’t turn white in as much as the hair loses color, but not over night, or even a wild weekend.

6.  Pluck one gray hair and two grow back.

Folks, if this were true I would be pulling my hair out by the fist full. I need more hair and can always color the gray hair.

7.  Baldness is inherited from the mothers side of the family.

More Hair Voodoo. Male and female pattern hair loss can be inherited from either side of the family and may or may not skip many generations. Male pattern hair loss usually begins at age 18 to 20 and female patter hair loss between ages 45 and 55.

8. Dandruff is caused by dry scalp.

Dandruff and dry scalp are two entirely different things. A good shampoo and conditioner will take care of the dry scalp, which is ‘flaking’. Dandruff shampoos are entirely unnecessary and inadvisable for dry scalp.

Dandruff is a serious health issue and requires medical attention and prescribed medication. The ‘flakes’ are actually oily, not dry. Very few people have actual dandruff and you would know it if you did.

9.  Dandruff is contagious.

No. You already have the micro organism that causes dandruff, yours just aren’t as active. On the other hand, there are plenty of nasty things you can get from someone else’s comb or brush, so be careful.

10.  Cutting your hair during a full moon makes it grow in healthier, fuller, faster or longer.

Give me a break. I am not even going to dignify this one with an explanation. Hey, if they buy into this type of earth muffin drivel, by all means, let them mark the dates on their calendar.

JAMES PIVARNIK, the director of the Human Energy Research Laboratory at Michigan State University, is all in favor of a woman exercising when she is pregnant. But some of the athletes he studied seemed to know no bounds.

“I had a woman, she was huge, and she was running seven-minute miles up to Week 39,” Dr. Pivarnik said. “It looked like she had a basketball under her shirt.”

It was, he said, close to the pace she had run before her pregnancy.

He was worried, but not about the baby. Dr. Pivarnik was concerned about the woman’s abdominal muscles and whether they would be pulled with all that jostling. “But she claimed she was not uncomfortable, so who was I to argue?” he said.

So often I’m asked, "Are all fast foods bad for you?" and "Which is the best fast food place for low fat diets?" Questions like these take me back to a time when I remember how much smaller fast food meals used to be . . . when chicken and fish arrived only deep-fried . . . and one’s choice of beverage did not include skim milk. Times have changed in the fast food industry, and certainly for the better. For those of you who frequent the pick-up windows, check out these helpful hints for lower fat fare.

Burgers and Fries

They had it right in the beginning when they came out with small burgers. Common sense tells us that the bigger the burger, the more saturated fat - .the kind that your liver loves to make cholesterol out of. It’s no surprise that the added cheese, bacon, mayonnaise and special sauces serve to top the fat off. Helpful hint: choose your toppings wisely. Ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles offer no extra fat.

Same rule applies for fries: the smaller the better. Don’t be fooled by the "fried in vegetable shortening" ads. Like beef fat, shortening provides plenty of saturated fat. The best potato choice? Go for the baked version and load it with salsa - definitely one of my favourites. And don’t forget to eat the skin.

Chicken and Fish

The rules are pretty simple here. If you’re going for the deep-fried versions, you’re in for a lot of fat. Methods of cooking that allow the fat to drip off would be a much leaner route. While chicken nuggets might be chosen every so often, a grilled, roasted or broiled piece of chicken or fish would be your best bet. Like the burgers, it’s what you put on top that determines the total fat content. Helpful hint: if your favourite fast food doesn’t offer a grilled version, ask to have it included on the menu. Menu choices are driven by consumer requests!

Subs, Wraps and Pitas

Subs can make for a healthy, low fat sandwich when prepared on whole grain buns smeared with a little mayo, oil, butter or cheese. Go for the cooked turkey or chicken breast versus the processed meat fillings. Feel free to load your sub with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, peppers, mustard and pickles.

While wraps are sweeping the US, they’re slowly creeping into Canada. They’re made from pita bread or flour tortillas and stuffed with salad ingredients, chicken, fish, beans and vegetables. You just have to watch out for the dressings and sauces. Helpful hint: ask that your wrap be prepared with half the fat. If you get the chance, give this heart-healthy sandwich alternative a try.

Salads

Most fast food places offer a decent sized salad that can substitute for a meal. The trick here is to choose a salad with lots of colour - plenty of reds, orange and rich greens. A topping of grilled chicken or a toss of sunflower seeds packs a little protein, while a breadstick rounds the meal off. Helpful hint: you control the amount of dressing that goes on your salad. Ask for the low calorie types or use half of the regular versions.

So there you have it. A quick, healthy, energizing lunch is available at most fast food restaurants. You need only to consider your options, and modify your choices to make them as lean as you wish. Final hint: ask for some nutrition information when you place your order. Many restaurants now have these facts available.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW. Breast cancer is common. The older you get, the higher your risk of breast cancer. At age 30, the risk is one in 6,000 per year. At 40, one in 1,200; at 50, one in 550 per year. Early detection is the key. You can detect a lump through a breast self-exam, a breast exam by a health professional or a mammogram. Most breasts are lumpy during a woman’s menstrual cycle. If a lump doesn’t go away after a full cycle, see your doctor immediately. Remember, in many cases, a lumpectomy followed by radiation is as effective as a mastectomy (a mastectomy removes the entire breast, a lumpectomy removes a section of the breast).

WHAT YOU CAN DO. Maintain a well-balanced diet. Reduce fat and eat more nutritious, high-fibre foods. Exercise on a regular basis. Learn how to examine your breasts and examine them monthly. Know your breasts well enough to notice a change. Schedule annual mammograms. A mammogram can detect a lump two years before you can feel it.

Most women these days spend a lot of time making themselves look and feel good. The art of enhancing one’s body dimensions is a popular trend these days, and women put top priority to be healthy and beautiful, both inside and out. The need to look gorgeous and be always in good shape is fuelling a boom in the marketing of health products and supplements.

At present, when women want to enhance their breast sizes, which are either for aesthetic or general wellness purposes, there are many methods that offer ladies an alternative to surgery for increasing bust sizes. Majority of the treatments promoted and sold on TV, the Internet, and in women’s magazines, generally target a woman’s lack of confidence in their current breast sizes as a result of either giving birth, losing weight, or having their breast implants removed.

Breast Enlargement Supplements Contain Herbal Ingredients

It is important for buyers to find out the kinds of ingredients that are present in the natural breast enhancement pills that they purchase. The natural ingredients added in supplements are generally included since these herbs are noted to make breasts grow bigger and firmer. The ingredients that customers usually find in a natural breast enhancement pill or cream are Vitamin E, Fenugreek, Fennel, Dong Quai, Blessed Thistle, Dandelion, Kelp, Watercress and L-Tyrosine. These herbs have been noted to have positive effects on the growth and natural stimulation of breast tissue.

Natural Supplements Also Increase Estrogen Levels

Essentially, the size and shape of a women’s breast is generally determined or halted by hormones. The most significant hormone in this aspect is estrogen. Usually, during puberty when breasts start to develop, estrogen and other hormones are released in the proper amounts that cause breasts to grow to what is considered the average cup size of "C".

In some cases, genetics and body chemistry begin to interfere and the hormones are not released in their proper amounts, which results in breast tissues that do not fully develop. Inadequate nutrition and diets may also have an effect on the poor regulation of the body’s hormones.

Many herbal breast enlargement pills and supplements contain an array of ingredients that are reputed to assist in the regulation of female hormones. There are also herbal ingredients that aid digestion and skin health in order to ensure that the estrogen-regulating botanicals can function as effectively as possible. This of course means that the herbs could also help lessen the effects brought about by the menstrual cycle, such as abdominal cramps.

Most Breast Enlargement Products Are Safe To Use

Recent trends show that more and more women are benefiting from breast enhancement pills & creams to enlarge and enhance their breasts. Generally, these pill and cream combinations effectively work to increase the breast sizes without any risk of surgery or use of any unsafe hormonal methods. Many of the pills and cream sold in the market today are usually made from naturally occurring herbs and botanicals, and are safe for use.

Each person loses 80-100 hairs every day. If you’re surprised at this amount, you should just take a look at how much hair long-haired dogs shed, that’s an enormous amount, but I bet you’ve never seen a bald dog.

If you’re not losing your hair in clumps you shouldn’t be worried. The older you get the thinner your hair becomes, because of hormonal changes.
Stress increases hair loss but if you only suffer from stress temporarily, then you will only suffer from temporary hair loss.
Poor nutrition also causes hair loss and hair thinning. It takes the body 7 years to recover from giving birth; many women suffer from hair loss while they’re pregnant.
